Intro & First Impression

Welcome to my blog about the book Born a Crime, written by Trevor Noah, a South African comedian and producer who grew up during the dangerous and problematic time period that apartheid was in place.
Trevor Noah begins the first few chapters by introducing what apartheid actually was, his relationship with his religious mother, and the conflicts that existed between people of different groups and backgrounds. He makes an important point about how severe the racism was that fueled apartheid to begin with. He states that the reason why it was enforced so heavily was that "race-mixing proves that races can mix", which is a fact that racists didn't want to believe because their whole mindset was that different races were separated in every way possible. I think that this clarification shows how it was more than just racism, it was complete hatred and division.
So far, his explanations of what was going on during his childhood gave me more insight about apartheid more than any textbook would. It made the issues more real and showed injustice on a deeper level since he went through all of it himself and could say exactly how it affected people. It's crazy to think that people actually supported apartheid and thought that it made sense. Besides the topic of the book itself, I like Trevor Noah's writing style and voice throughout the stories that he tells. It brings some lightness to take away from the negativity of the issues that he discusses.
